Wei Lun Foundation fosters 35 years of academic exchange between HKBU and Tsinghua University

Every summer, students in the summer programme participate in various academic and exchange activities to broaden their horizons

Through Wei Lun Foundation Limited’s generous donation in 1989, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and Tsinghua University jointly established the “Wei Lun Academic Exchange Centre” (the Centre) in the following year. The Centre launched the China Studies Summer Programme, which annually sponsors up to 100 HKBU students to participate in academic activities at Tsinghua University in Beijing. This forward-thinking initiative has not only strengthened academic ties between HKBU and one of China’s top institutions but has also contributed to talent development in the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, empowering young students to broaden their horizons and to gain a deeper understanding of the Nation.

Thanks to the Foundation’s support, HKBU and Tsinghua University renewed their cooperation agreement in 2025, providing stable funding for the Centre’s long-term sustainability. As of the end of 2024, the Centre has organised 34 iterations of the Chinese Studies Summer Programme, alongside Putonghua proficiency test training courses and humanities and translation studies programmes, benefitting over 3,700 HKBU students.

Since 2009, the Centre has also offered the “Hong Kong and Macao Studies” Summer Programme, hosting around 30 Tsinghua students annually for study tours in Hong Kong and Macao, where they explore the two cities’ social development from multiple perspectives. Additionally,  the “Wei Lun Distinguished Visiting Professorship Scheme” has, over the past 18 years, engaged 70 experts and scholars from around the world to lecture and conduct research at Tsinghua University, enhancing international academic exchange and collaboration with fruitful results.

Wei Lun Foundation Limited was founded by the late Dr. Lee Quo Wei and his wife, Mrs. Helen Lee Yick Hoi Lun, in 1989. For decades, the Foundation has rendered substantial support for HKBU’s strategic development, funding key initiatives such as the construction of a student hostel, David C. Lam Building, and the establishment of the “Wei Lun Foundation China Studies Scholarship”. The Foundation is currently honoured as Honorary Permanent President of the HKBU Foundation.

On the occasion of the Centre’s 35th anniversary, the HKBU Foundation wishes to express its sincere gratitude to Wei Lun Foundation for its unwavering support towards the University.
